Having watched many YouTube channels during their release reviewing the product line the consensus was along the lines of interesting but not necessarily valuable to the experienced painter. Since the release of contrast paint in 2019 into the hobby space, I admit I’ve avoided buying and using a them. While there are other companies who have created paint similar to the contrast paint, access to Games Workshop paints are widely available in my area and are considered by some to be the best of their type.

Contrast Paints appear similar to a wash or shade but also appear somewhat thicker to allow for full coverage in painting the model. The largest benefit of these paints can be used in tandem with a zenithal highlight (light color prime over a dark like the sun is shining at its zenith). By suppling so many steps in a single application it can help a novice painter glaze over some technical steps and save valuable time going back to apply multiple coats or even colors to achieve similar effect. Contrast paints are designed to base coat, shade and highlight the miniature in a single coat and most commonly used over a light undercoat. However here are some of my first experiences and observations using the paint.Ĭontrast paints are a paint formulated by Games Workshop to help assist new painters or even those who choose to speed up their painting process. I am still very much new to using contrast paints and acknowledge a lot to learn. Since I already spent quite a few painting sessions on the miniature and already am behind schedule in painting my Frostgrave game with over 15 miniatures over the next month I decided to try in more detail the usage of citadels contrast paints.

While it was setting my baseline for skill and observing room for improvement when painting skin I also really wanted to finish the model.

Now most sane painters will apply highlights and shadows using mostly opaque paints and then glaze the transitions to smooth them while shaking our heads sadly at the painters who still want to spend 30 hours painting a single 5mm square patch of miniature.Last week I posted I paint job of the Hill Giant Tyrant Ogi Skullcrusher and my experimentation for painting skin. If you got the mix perfect it would dry between brush strokes. Because the first people to popularize this technique were French and we were reading bad babelfish translated tutorials it became known as juicing. In the bad old days people discovered they could apply millions of glazes to create smooth blends. This is often used when highlighting or shading or even creating a transition between two different colours. It isn't meant to pool and I prefer my glazes to be the same viscosity as my paint. Glazing is a thin application of translucent colour over a large or small area intended to subtly change the surface colour.

Glaze: Back in the old days GW had both washes and glazes but when I asked their customer care they didn't know what the difference was. However it often pools on flat surfaces and then you need to paint over that pooling and at that point I start to wonder what is the point. In mini painting the goal of a wash is to pool in recesses and provide shading. Wash: A thin application of translucent colour applied broadly over a surface. However Liquitex Acrylic Inks use suspended pigments and Golden High Flow Acrylic Paint is used in pens. The line is blurry here but generally paints are thicker or inks use a dye which is dissolved in the medium while paint uses pigments suspended in medium. This is because in miniature painting almost all washes are meant to add shadows. Shade only recently started to refer to a type of wash. Calling a product a shade or a wash is marketing with the intended technique. If you need to message the modteam or discuss something about the subreddit, please message us through modmail here.
